<image:caption>Problem: Sales team users want to understand who their existing customers are, their interests and their behaviors. In order to do this, users need to import their customers into Salesgenie. The problem was the existing tool and workflow to import data into the system was difficult to discover and understand – the interface often provided incorrect feedback and the process felt slow and unresponsive. This resulted in users abandoning the task, leaving the entire suite of Salesgenie products at risk of failure of adoption. Any customer growth would rely on internal customer service representatives performing the tasks for the user which was not scalable for our business. Goal: Make it easy for users to understand how to import and map their customers to our database to perform behavioral analysis. Process: I began with a heuristic evaluation of the existing tool and conducted moderated think-aloud usability tests of the existing tool. I presented my findings to get business consensus on the need to improve the tool. I explored a variety of concepts and through creating prototypes and testing with users I refined the interactions and workflow design. Result: The end result was a 15% increase in the number of customer files successfully uploaded and mapped to our database. All increase in usage came from do-it-yourself users. In the end I produced hundreds of wireframes documenting requirements for all use cases and edge cases. I worked with our visual designer to develop a consistent visual design throughout the tool and worked with our developers to implement the update.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Problem: Library users (a target group for the product) want to use our mapping tool to identify opportunities for library growth by comparing their existing patrons’ demographics, behaviors and interests to those of a geographic segment such as their surrounding community. However, our mapping tool was limited in features and had technical constraints that limited the amount of data we could show at a given time. Goal: Create an easy way for library users to understand what their communities looks like in our mapping tool, view their patron distribution, find gaps in coverage and discover opportunities for growth based on characteristics similar to their existing patrons. Process: I began this project by interviewing library customers and prospective customers to understand their needs. Once the qualitative data was collected, I created skyscraper mental models to identify opportunities to tailor our product features to the target users’ needs. This also helped to validate or invalidate previously planned product features in order to efficiently allocate our product design resources. Then I sketched and wireframed initial UI layouts and conducted tests to determine which UI would be easiest to understand and most flexible for the variety of tasks needed to be completed. Once I gained feedback validating a strong direction, I built out the remaining wireframes, prototyped and tested interactions over many iterations. Result: The map is now an interactive, customizable tool that provides users with insights into the characteristics that make up a population. Users are able to view the geographic distribution of their patrons. The result has been welcomed by our target users and we have gained many new accounts with these improvements. We have been adding more mapping features (such as drive routes for field salespeople – another target user) and the UI system created for this project has been able to be reused as the foundation of our design system.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Problem: Mom-and-Pop marketing users wanted to a simple platform to create automated, drip email marketing campaigns. We had a self-service email marketing tool, but users relied on our internal teams to build email campaigns for them. The tool was inflexible, customization was limited and it lacked guidance. The business wanted to grow it’s email marketing business, but the assistance required would have reduced the margins we would see as we scale. Goal: Build an email marketing tool that boosts self-service usage. Process: To start out, I met with our internal team responsible for assisting users and conducted a heuristic evaluation of the tool to uncover glaring or known issues that contributed to lack of use. Then, I coordinated multiple user interviews to define user needs with an email marketing platform. I conducted usability tests to see where users succeeded and failed with the existing tool. From this research I catalogued areas we needed to work on and prioritized the improvements we needed to make. I presented to business stakeholders and gained consensus on the project scope. From there, I explored several high level concepts, received user and stakeholder feedback to narrow down to one, and iterated on the interactions via testing to define the remaining details. Result: The result is a do-it-yourself email marketing tool that fits users’ needs and expectations and is easy to use. Online marketing sales opportunities have grown drastically because of this. We broke up email campaign creation into 4 key parts: defining the audience, setting campaign details, selecting and customizing creative, and finally testing and scheduling the campaign to send. Now these parts can be completed in any order a user needs – users are no longer held to a rigid process that requires one piece to be known or defined before the next. We have also created a clearer storage of previously used email creative in a template gallery to speed up email creation for users. Users no longer have to build each email from scratch or upload HTML every time they want to send an email campaign. In the email creative editor, we broke up the pre-fabricated “modules” so users can customize their layouts in many more ways and access previously used images and brand assets.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Problem: As Instructure’s flagship product, Canvas, grew in features and it took on new markets, design and development speed slowed, inconsistencies arose and non-functional requirements became a repeated obstacle. This was because hundreds of different people were working on features, accessibility and internationalization were mandatory for anything we built, and the coordination required to pin down consistency took a lot of time. Goal: Develop a scalable, reusable design system that solves interaction problems, accessibility needs, can be fully internationalized and customized, and speeds up feature delivery. Process: I collaborated with a lot of talented people here – other product designers, engineers, user interface developers, accessibility experts, to name a few. Through research, testing, and trust we have been able to build out not just a design component library, but a framework that is so flexible it can be adopted by any institution around the globe. My main contribution has been to the usability research and accessibility standards for components. I read dozens of usability studies and conducted my own tests to design highly usable interface elements that comply with WCAG 2.1 AA standards. This ensures people who use a mouse, keyboard or screen reader can access their school’s learning management system with ease. Result: We have seen huge success and excitement around InstUI. It is open source, so both our engineering teams and institutions outside Instructure have adopted it. This has sped up product release cycles and ensured consistency across our user experience within Canvas. Our design system has ensured we are fully compliant with government accessibility requirements in countries all over the world which has opened up tremendous opportunities for the business as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Problem: Teachers were spending too much time grading assignments and quizzes. They needed a way to grade faster and provide meaningful feedback to their students, often away from their desk or office. Goal: Give teachers a way to quickly view and grade student assignment submissions. The tool needed to accommodate a variety of submission types (documents, quizzes, essays). Teachers need to be able to annotate or 'mark-up’ student submissions and provide comments to students about their submissions. Teachers need to be able to grade quizzes 'one question at a time' or ‘one student at a time’. Process: I was new to this space, so I began by doing as much research as I could to understand the things teachers deal with – what their lives and and work-life balance was like, and all the demands they balance throughout a typical week and semester. I found a few key things that guided my initial designs: teachers were currently grading during gaps in between other commitments, they needed constant access to grading assignments and they could spend upwards of thirteen hours in a single day grading if they needed. Results: I produced a concept for a speed grading feature that was optimized for mobile devices. I chose mobile first because teachers were always in between other commitments and needed to squeeze in time to grade. The system could auto-grade standardized questions, so I focused more complex things. For instance, the designs allowed teachers to easily compare students and answers by swiping left and right and auto-feeding the next items. It also allows teachers to provide feedback on submissions with a few simple taps and synced progress across devices to continue wherever they left off when interrupted throughout the day. I made the visual and interaction designs more fun too, so that time they were spending grading didn’t feel so much like work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As an Accessibility Ambassador at AWS, I champion inclusive design practices and lead accessibility initiatives within our UX design team. My role focuses on ensuring our digital products and experiences are accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities. I've developed and implemented a comprehensive accessibility onboarding program for new design team hires, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to create designs that meet WCAG 2.0 standards from day one. Building bridges across AWS is a crucial part of my ambassador role, where I actively collaborate with our centralized accessibility team and fellow ambassadors from the AWS Training and Certification program and AWS Design System teams. This cross-functional partnership helps maintain consistency in our accessibility standards and strengthens our commitment to inclusive design throughout the organization. By fostering these connections and sharing best practices, I help ensure that accessibility isn't just a checklist item but a fundamental aspect of our design process, resulting in products that truly serve all of our users' needs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Problem: Passive educational content yields passive participation which results in lower retention rates. How can we help educators create engaging, low-stakes, and intuitive learning experiences that cater to individual learner needs? How do we scale such experiences from small schools to massive school districts? Goal: Create a simple yet feature-rich interactive video education platform so that educators and learners can actively engage along their learning journey, wherever they are. Process: I lead the product design for Canvas Studio for two years. During that time I partnered closely with product management and engineering to develop a product vision and stage out, build and ship features to our users. I also worked closely with our users; conducting interviews, feedback sessions and usability tests to validate our product ideas. Result: Over the course of the first three years of the product’s life, we tripled active users and sales three years in a row. What began as a limited video integration plug-in for Canvas, grew to be a feature rich, fully accessible platform that could be integrated into any Learning Management System on any device. Some notable features include video quizzing and grading; video editing and annotating; time-stamped discussions; viewer engagement analytics, the ability to record and play video anywhere, on any device; and personal video libraries and collections that can be shared across roles, courses, departments and school districts for flexible curation and collaboration.</image:caption>

<image:title>UX Case Studies - AWS Schedule Management System</image:title>
<image:caption>Problem: AWS Training Delivery Services oversees training programs for millions of learners globally, managing everything from instructor credentials and live training schedules to resource optimization and end-to-end training fulfillment. However, the proliferation of disparate, locally developed workflows across global teams created significant operational challenges. Without standardized business rules or a unified system of record, teams relied on redundant manual processes that hindered scalability and made it impossible to accurately measure business performance. This fragmented approach threatened to impede the organization’s growth trajectory and operational efficiency. Goal: I led the design initiative to establish a unified global platform for instructor management and training schedule coordination, consolidating diverse regional practices into a standardized framework. This involved synthesizing complex business rules from multiple delivery teams worldwide to create a cohesive system that served as the single source of truth for the organization. Process: I developed and implemented a highly effective UX design process that combined regular global stakeholder engagement with iterative design validation. Through weekly collaboration sessions with diverse user groups, I gathered requirements, validated design concepts, and refined solutions before moving into development. This systematic approach included conducting benchmark time studies to identify efficiency opportunities, leading to two consecutive rounds of significant improvements - first achieving a 30% efficiency gain (exceeding our 20% goal), followed by an additional 20% improvement. Combined with continuous user feedback through satisfaction surveys and usability testing, this data-driven approach ensured successful delivery of multiple training management tools while consistently elevating both user satisfaction and enabling rapid enhancement cycles based on real-world usage. Result: Over a three-month period, I led the design and launch of an instructor management system with global stakeholder input, followed by the design and release of a comprehensive schedule management tool that streamlined class delivery from sales opportunities to billing. These initiatives enabled the expansion of our Amazon Training Partner network with a partner class management tool, resulting in 80% of all trainings now being delivered by external partners, significantly enhancing program scalability.</image:caption>
